Idecided it would be wise to make sure Donna was safely out of the way before facing the repulsive task ahead. According to Kitty, there’d been nothing on the local news about random collapses in the Pall Mall area. Which was obviously a relief, but also surprising. Enough rubble had come down on Hugo’s head for me to have assumed the ground above it would have sunk, but evidently not. Which raised the uncomfortable notion that the tunnel itself was potentially outside of normal time. I didn’t fancy having a dead body hanging around in one of the city’s random time portals. Knowing my luck, it would get found during a random episode of Time Team, and the entire world would witness Tony Robinson being welcomed to the underworld by an ancient undead psycho. Get rid of Donna, I decided, then worry about Hugo. With any luck, she’d still be asleep in the office, and I could ask Sylvie to get her onto a train back to London as soon as humanly possible.

Walking from Flora’s down to the waterfront, I cursed the fact that, despite the city’s foundations being riddled with not-so-secret tunnels, none of them had the decency to connect my flat directly to the Liver Building. Life would be so much easier if I could run underground between the two, I thought, while speed-walking down Brunswick Street and across the Strand.

No one’s stopping you, said the city. Stick it in the planner. Get Mapp and Nikolaus in the office and do some blue-sky thinking. Run some ideas up the flagpole, maybe.

I didn’t reply until I was safely through the basement entrance and in the elevator. Donna knows enough to sink us, I said, which is why she won’t.

That does not make sense.

Yes, it does. The lift rose frustratingly slowly up through the seemingly endless floors of the Liver Building. Embarrassingly, I wasn’t even sure what each level was used for. They could have been running canine model agencies or growing industrial amounts of weed in there, for all I knew. She’s clever, I went on. Clever and curious. She isn’t going to risk missing out on potential adventure by dobbing us in to her bosses and risking us being raided or whatever.

You trust her? The London woman?

No, I bloody well do not! We’d finally reached the top floor, and I hopped impatiently as I waited for the doors. I don’t trust her as far as I could throw her. As far as I could have thrown her back when I was still human, I corrected. But I don’t think she’s a threat in the same way others are. The only thing we’re risking with having Donna around is that she’ll go nosing somewhere she shouldn’t and get nipped by a mermaid. Anyway, the door finally clanked into place and kicked into its torturous opening noises, considering how much brandy she drank last night, she’s probably still asleep.
